I have learned to expect to keep making discoveries. Lots of people think that they have already learned all the need to learn -- or maybe all they want to learn. That has not been my experience at all. I have recently passed my seventy-fifth birthday. Been around for three quarters of a century. I can't believe that! But I still find that life is full of surprises. So is the study of the Bible and the Christian faith. I have kept on studying longer than most people do. (A friend says that it just takes some people longer than others to learn what they need to know.) As I study, I still keep finding that new vistas keep opening up to me, and the horizons of my understanding keep growing broader. I suppose part of that is because I just hadn't yet gotten around to reading all that I need to read. There is an awful lot that needs reading. But I know that some of my new discoveries come because I have lived myself into a place where I can understand some aspects of our faith that I just couldn't understand before. Some of the new discoveries come in the shape of new insights into the meaning of life. Some of them come in the form of our faith that I have just couldn't understand before. Some of the new discoveries come in the shape of new insights into the meaning of life. Some of them come in the form of new questions with which I need to live. BOth of these are exciting to me. In my sermons here at Cokesbury, I have been sharing some of the insights from the growing edge of my faith. I hope that you find some of them helpful. But, even more, I hope to encourge you to keep a growing edge on your own faith and of your understanding of the meaning of life.
